The 2025 Canada SDS route: what has changed and how to prepare

A practical breakdown of the updated Student Direct Stream requirements and how to build a fund-proof application.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) has long been the fastest route to a Canadian study permit for eligible applicants, and 2025 brought a handful of meaningful updates that every applicant should understand before filing.
The biggest shift is around proof of funds. IRCC has tightened its documentation requirements, so a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) alone is no longer treated as automatically sufficient — officers are cross-checking it against tuition receipts and the overall financial picture of the file. Applicants who build a clean, well-labelled funds package from day one are seeing noticeably faster decisions.
Processing times have also become more season-sensitive. Filing in the weeks immediately before the January and September intakes routinely adds several weeks to the timeline, so we now recommend locking in your Letter of Acceptance and GIC at least ten to twelve weeks before your intended departure.
Our advisors rebuild each SDS file around this tighter scrutiny: fund sources are documented end-to-end, the Statement of Purpose is aligned with the funds story, and every applicant sits through a mock biometrics-to-interview walkthrough before submission.
