Smart student airfares: booking windows, baggage and hacks

When to book, how to use student fares, and the baggage rules every new student should know.
Student airfares exist because airlines want to capture long-haul, one-way bookings before a student ever thinks to look elsewhere — and the fares can be genuinely excellent if you know when and how to book them.
The booking window that matters most is 3-4 months before departure for peak intakes (August-September and December-January). Book much earlier and student fare allocations may not yet be released; book much later and the discounted inventory is usually gone, leaving only standard economy pricing.
Baggage is where student fares earn their keep — most carry an extra 10-15kg over standard economy allowances, which matters enormously when you're moving your life abroad rather than going on a two-week holiday. Always confirm the checked-baggage allowance in writing before ticketing, since it varies by carrier and route far more than the fare itself does.
Our travel desk compares carriers specifically on the total cost of moving — fare plus baggage plus change flexibility — rather than the sticker price alone, which is usually where the real savings (or hidden costs) actually sit.
